چکیده

We evaluate the e¤ects of aging on productivity using data from piece-rates. Our data contains the population of Finnish blue collar metal industry workers from years 1996-2000. A unique feature of the data is that we can observe the exact hours worked on piece-rates and time rates as well as earnings from both performance schemes. Moreover, a subset of workers receive both piece-rates and time rates within the same quarter. For these workers, we can directly compare the age pro…le of hourly wages under piece-rate and time rate pay systems. The results show that productivity increases with age through most of the career. Productivity increase is initially faster than wage increase but after age 30 productivity increases at a slower rate than wages. Corresponding author. Incentives, Productivity and Selection in Labor Markets: Evidence from Rural Malawi∗

An observed positive relationship between compensation and productivity cannot distinguish between two channels: (1) an incentive effect and (2) a selection effect. We use a simplified Becker-Degroot-Marschak mechanism (BDM), which provides random variation in piece rates conditional on revealed reservation rates, to separately identify the two channels in the context of casual labor markets in...

Laval " Measuring Ratchet Effects within a Firm : Evidence from a Field Experiment varying Contractual Commitment

We present results from a field experiment designed to measure the importance of managerial commitment to a contract within a firm that pays its workers piece rates. During the experiment, firm managers told a crew of tree planters that the piece rate had yet ...

Do women react differently to incentives? Evidence from experimental data and payroll records

We consider the response to incentives as an explanation for observed productivity differences within a firm that paid its workers piece rates. We provide a framework within which the observed productivity differences can be decomposed into two parts: One due to differences in ability and the other due to differences in the response to incentives. We apply this decomposition to male and female ...
